"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the best groups, they're a close unit. Their videos often feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international audience.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
