The Global Health Body Issues Alert Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Less than a tenth of people who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural advice on the medications.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous support," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major barriers to broad access to the jabs that can help people shift significant weight, notes the agency.

Even in the present most optimistic case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation urges governments and firms to widen availability, via measures such as voluntary licensing.

A patent on semaglutide – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.
