A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
