The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
