A extended journey circling the Land Down Under is being halted days after the fatal incident of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been hiking on the tropical location with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the group for a rest. The liner departed without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff became aware the lady was not present.

A major rescue mission discovered her remains the following day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, together with police and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer announced that guests and personnel on the ship were told that the continuation of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and earlier technical problems".

Via official communication, he further stated that passengers would be given a full refund, and said the company was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Officials also published an revised statement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Captain" preventing any new passengers from entering the liner.

The representative said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its arrival.

Sequence of Events

The ship originally sailed from the Australian port on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the point of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the initial destination on the itinerary.

Travelers on the ship - who generally pay tens of thousands of dollars to join the cruise - were ferried there for a day trip with the choice of walking or snorkelling.

Relatives Response

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "surprised and grieved that the vessel left the island after an organised tour without my parent".

Via her announcement, she characterized her parent as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"Based on limited information we have been provided, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and basic judgment," she stated.

She further stated that she desired the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have done that might have preserved Mum's life".

"Based on information from the police that it was a extremely warm afternoon, and she took sick on the hill climb," she stated.

"They requested her to go back, unescorted. Then the boat departed, apparently without performing a passenger count.

"At a certain moment in that process, or soon after, mum passed away, without company."

Operator Reaction

Through an announcement, the CEO confirmed that the company was "collaborating extensively with officials to assist their inquiry".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has occurred" and had extended its complete assistance to the family.

Cruise Industry Practices

The liner accommodates up to 120 travelers with 46 personnel, according to official data. It was specially constructed to access distant locations of Australia's coastline and is fitted with "small boats" - minor craft used to transport travelers on day excursions.

Events such as this are rare, and liners have procedures to document which travelers are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," one expert stated.

Shipping companies regard these procedures very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to avoid such incidents from taking place," the specialist added.

"This seems to be presumably a surprising - and unfortunate - single occurrence."
